Need to request your LEI code? Xerius will handle everything.

Whether you're a trading expert or sell the odd share occasionally, without an LEI code your company cannot execute any transactions. Xerius is where your code – otherwise known as a Legal Entity Identifier – can be requested, renewed and transferred. This will keep you on the right side of the law.

What is an LEI code?

An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique 20-character code that is used worldwide to identify legal entities in financial transactions. The LEI code ensures transparency in the market and clarifies which organizations are involved in specific financial activities.

Requesting your LEI code

Who has to request an LEI code?

Under a European investment directive, LEI codes are required for companies, organisations and associations. Without this number they cannot trade shares, bonds, warrants, government certificates and other financial products.

What information should be included with a request?

First and foremost, we need your company or organisation's details such as its name, address and company number.

Are you a manager or director? If so, and your company does not have a parent company, you don't need to provide any more documentation.  Your LEI code will be issued almost immediately.

Are you submitting a request as an authorised representative? In that case, we'll need a copy of your authorisation document, which is simple to upload.  You'll usually be issued with your LEI code on the same day.

Does your company have a parent company? If so, Xerius will search for evidence such as a consolidated financial statement. If we can't find any evidence, we'll ask you to provide some.  Of course, in this case your request will take a little longer.

Do you want to feel confident and carefully read our terms and conditions? No problem. Our General Terms and Conditions and Terms of Use are summarised here.

Renewing your LEI code

You must renew your LEI code every year. You don’t need to worry about that renewal. Up to six weeks before your code expires, we'll e-mail you to check whether your details are still correct. All you then have to do is pay and you're done: you can carry out transactions all year long.

Transferring your LEI code

Is your LEI code currently elsewhere? Transfer it to Xerius free of charge. Three great reasons to transfer your code to Xerius:

  1. You'll enjoy an all-round service, from transferring management to annual renewal. We'll get in touch when it's time to renew your code – you don't need to give it a second thought.
  2. The lowest rates, guaranteed. Xerius' renewal fee is lower than the fees with your current LEI issuer or bank (who have codes issued by LEI issuers abroad).
  3. You'll receive information that is clear and easy to understand. This isn't always a given in the financial sector.

What if your entity’s registered office is in the Netherlands or France?

You can also contact Xerius. After all, we are an approved LEI issuer for both countries. This means that you can apply for an LEI code for the LEI code for the Netherlands, LEI code for France or LEI code for Luxemburg at Xerius with peace of mind.

Why were LEI codes introduced?

The financial crisis was caused by negligence on the part of the banks and stock exchanges, and Europe took robust measures to prevent another day of reckoning. LEI codes (standing for Legal Entity Identifier) are one such measure. These unique identifiers make it easier to trace transactions, in turn making the market more transparent – and safer.

What do LEI codes look like?

An LEI code is a 20-character code.

  • The first 4 digits are the LEI issuer's prefix. Xerius' prefix is 6994.
  • After this comes a combination of 14 letters and digits. This code is unique for each applicant.
  • The last 2 digits are check digits.
  • The 20-character code is structured according to the ISO 17442 standard.

Is an LEI code mandatory?

Yes. At least if your company or organization, with or without legal personality, carries out financial transactions such as trading in shares, bonds, or other financial instruments. Without a valid LEI code, your business cannot participate in these transactions, causing you to miss out on important trading opportunities. It is therefore crucial to apply for or renew an LEI code on time.

How long is your LEI code valid?

An LEI code is valid for one year from the date of issuance. To keep your code active, you must renew it annually. Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about that: we will send you a timely reminder to ensure your LEI code is always up to date. Without timely renewal, your code will expire, and your company will no longer be able to carry out financial transactions that require an LEI code.

Can I request an LEI code for a non-Belgian company?

Xerius is accredited for Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. You can apply online via our website for an LEI code for France, an LEI code for the Netherlands, or an LEI code for Luxembourg. If you need an LEI code for an entity from another country, we can help thanks to our international network. Send us an email at lei@xerius.be or call us on 03 221 09 69.

My LEI details are not, or no longer, up to date. What happens now?

No problem! Pass on the correct data via lei@xerius.be.

How do I terminate my LEI code?

Your LEI code will always be linked to your business or organisation. Your code is valid for one year, and if it is not renewed will be classified as LAPSED (expired). You can renew your code at any time.

Your LEI code will only be terminated if your business or organisation ceases to exist, for example because of a merger, liquidation or bankruptcy. Simply notify us of this by writing to us at lei@xerius.be. Xerius will take care of the rest.

Where can I find a company/organisation's LEI code?

You can do this on the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) website. You can search by company number, name and address. You will also be able to see whether their LEI code is still valid.

How do I report an error in a client or partner's LEI details?

If Xerius manages their LEI code, send an e-mail to lei@xerius.be. Include the LEI code in question and the error. If necessary, Xerius will contact the business or organisation and amend these details.

If the LEI code is not managed by Xerius, use the Challenge function on de GLEIF website.

How can I become a Xerius partner?

If you're active in the financial sector and want to take on your clients' LEI administration, Xerius would love to work with you. Send an e-mail to lei@xerius.be or call us on +32 (0)3 221 09 69.
